Madurkathi mats
Reed from the wetlands, dried with the season, woven at home. The shoppable mats will appear when we have honest stock — not before.
The material
A floor that breathes, and a wage that can stay.
Madur kathi grows in the marshlands of Eastern India. For generations, weavers have cut it, dried it, and turned it into mats for sitting, sleeping, and prayer. A mat is not a lifestyle accessory first. It is cool ground, and a household’s week.
House of Dhrti partners with weaver families so the reed can travel into a modern room — yoga, reading, a guest offered the cool place — without turning the loom into a factory clock.
The weaving
Life follows the monsoon. So does the work. We do not place orders that ignore the weather.
Reed is cut in season. Out of season, we wait. That is not delay; that is the crop.
Stems season in air. Natural colour, sometimes natural dye — not a plastic coat.
Home frames, tight even weave. Large mats take days. No motor in the rhythm.
Edges bound so the piece can live on a floor, not only in a photograph.
“When we weave, we think of the person who will sit. We want it to last, and to stay quiet in the room.”
Custom and bulk
Need a size the loom can still honour?
Write to us about custom dimensions or wholesale. We will not rush a weaver past the reed. While mats wait, terracotta jewellery is the collection you can take home today.
