The same reed as the mats, turned toward baskets, trays, and small vessels for a kitchen that is actually used.

The material

Reed that works in the house, not only on a shelf.

Madurkathi weaving in Eastern India has always been more than floor covering. Storage, serving, the small architecture of a house — reed takes those shapes on the same looms, in the same rooms, by the same families.

House of Dhrti will list these objects when we can trace them to those rooms and pay for the hours they take. Until then, we will not borrow someone else’s catalogue.

Thoughtful living

You see the weave every time you set down a cup.

Choosing a handwoven tray is a way to slow a house down. The piece will scuff. That is use, which is the point. Synthetic lookalikes do not carry a weaver’s week, and they do not return money to a wetland village.

“A basket should work in the house. If it only looks well on a shelf, we have made the wrong thing.”
